TSL Tip: Know Your Labels

How do you ensure you and your colleagues have the right lanyard for the job?

Per ANSI/ASSE Z359.13-2013, which is the ANSI standard for Personal Energy Absorbers and Energy Absorbing Lanyards, each lanyard should have a label stating whether it is a 6 ft. or a 12 ft. Free Fall lanyard.

For example, the 6 ft. FF lanyard will have a white label with black lettering and the 12 ft. FF lanyard will have a black label with white lettering. (image shown left)

DIANE’S ‘GOOD TO KNOW’: Know what standards, markings and testing to look for when choosing PPE

13615288_1039353559482875_8067794086727704388_nI recently ran across a large company placing a purchase order for descent devices that were not tested to a descent standard, but rather a standard for rope grabs. When choosing Personal Protective Equipment for your employees, it is important to determine which standard is appropriate for the equipment you are considering. Asking for a certification can determine if the testing criteria were met. Manufacturers should have this information readily available and many will go the extra step and have their products 3rd party certified. Additionally, make sure that the lab that offers the certification is an ISO 17025 accredited lab. Be cautious of a lab that can produce testing results overnight. For example, some testing standards will include a corrosion test. This test alone takes 96 hours to complete. Lastly, know your markings. PPE that is certified in Europe as being CE compliant, will bear the CE mark followed by 4 numbers. These 4 numbers identify the lab that performed the tests.
